The lake is part of Coimbatore’s centuries-old chain of interconnected tanks in the Noyyal basin, spread across roughly 70+ acres, and was restored and landscaped under the Coimbatore Smart City Mission — the same project that transformed Periyakulam, Krishnampathy, Selvampathy and other city lakes. What was once a neglected water body is today one of the city’s most pleasant family destinations.

A walker’s park first

The park’s biggest draw is its wide, well-laid granite walking promenade running along the lakefront — broad enough that even on busy evenings you never feel squeezed the way you do on the Race Course walkway. Landscaped grass mounds, ornamental grasses, hedges and young trees line the path, with plenty of step seating and benches facing the water. Come in the golden hour and you’ll catch the sun setting over the lake with egrets, herons and other water birds gliding across — a genuinely calming sight in the middle of the city.

Evenings are the sweet spot — the park comes alive after 4:30 PM with families, walkers and kids. Weekends get lively and a little crowded, but the hustle and bustle has its own charm; if you want quiet, come on a weekday evening or early morning. Summer afternoons are best avoided as shade is still growing in the newly landscaped sections.

Getting there and parking

The park has two entrances — the main one on Thadagam Road and another on the Chinnavedampatti–Thondamuthur side road. It sits very close to Gandhi Park Bus Stand, so it’s easily reachable by city bus from Gandhipuram or Ukkadam. Ample two-wheeler and four-wheeler parking is available outside both entrances — a big plus over Race Course, where parking is always a struggle.
