3.1 Temple History

The Legend of Arulmigu Koniamman Temple

In ancient times, the Kongu region where the city of Coimbatore now stands was covered in dense forest. Kovan, the chieftain of the Irular community, cleared and developed the land, transforming it into a settlement he governed. During his reign, a famine struck the region, leaving his people with no means to sustain themselves. Moved by their suffering, Kovan cleared a small patch of forest land, installed a stone there, and began worshipping it as the Mother Goddess, praying for his people’s prosperity and for freedom from famine and disease. Following this, the people of the Kongu region flourished. The Irular community came to regard this deity as their family goddess (Kula Theyvam) and built a temple to worship her. Located to the north of the city, the goddess was revered as the guardian deity who protected the settlement.

Generations later, after Kovan’s rule, the region came under the rule of Ilangosar. During this period, a Chera king launched an invasion. To protect the land, a fort and a wedding pavilion (mana medai) were built at the centre of what is now Coimbatore, and the guardian goddess was installed there for worship. This deity came to be worshipped as Koniamman.

Koniamman is regarded as an embodiment of Lord Shiva’s consort (Sivamsa Ambigai). She faces north and is depicted with eight arms, holding a trident, an udukkai (hand drum), a sword, a conch, a skull-cup, fire, a discus and a bell. Like Shiva, she wears a kundalam (ear ornament) in her left ear — a rare iconographic form that expresses the belief that Shiva and Shakti are not separate but one. A lion mount (Simha Vahanam) stands facing the sanctum, and the goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi and Durga are enshrined in the front mandapam.

Throughout the Tamil month of Aadi, a swing festival (Oonjal) is held for the deity, with special poojas performed on new-moon (Amavasai) and full-moon (Pournami) days. To the right of the goddess, the Navagraha deities are enshrined together with their consorts — a rare arrangement — and behind the sanctum are Aadi Koniamman, Santha Vinayagar, and Subramaniar with his consorts Valli and Deivanai.

At the northern entrance, on a site spanning roughly one acre, stands the temple’s Raja Gopuram (main tower), along with a shrine for Panchamukha Vinayagar.

Devotees believe that praying here removes obstacles to marriage, blesses couples with children, cures illnesses, and helps businesses prosper. Families whose children find a suitable marriage match after praying to Koniamman often hold the engagement ceremony at the temple itself: both families fill a basket with salt and place turmeric, coconut, betel leaves, areca nut, flowers and fruit on top of it, sealing the marriage in the presence of Koniamman as witness, while also praying for freedom from illness and for marital blessings (mangalya bhagyam).

Coimbatore’s only 14-day annual temple car (Ther) festival, held in the Tamil month of Maasi, takes place exclusively at this temple.
