Arulmigu Dhandumariamman Temple Uppilipalayam, Avinashi Road, Coimbatore – 641018

Revered by the people of Coimbatore as their Kuladheivam (family deity) for the removal of life’s troubles, Arulmigu Dhandumariamman Temple stands in the heart of the city on Avinashi Road, just 700 metres from Coimbatore Railway Station and 2 km from Gandhipuram Bus Stand. The presiding deity is Goddess Dhandumariamman, worshipped as Mupperum Deviyai, Akilanda Nayaki, Adiparasakthi, and Karpaga Rakshambikai — the compassionate mother who grants prosperity and rules over Coimbatore as its sovereign guardian.

Structure: The temple stands on a square 0.39-acre-cent site, facing north, enclosed on all four sides by a compound wall 15 feet high and 120 feet wide. A golden temple car (Ther) stand sits to the front-left of the shrine. The temple complex houses 4 sub-shrines, and a stage near the office on the left hosts events such as Thirukalyanam (divine wedding) and Navaratri celebrations.

Recent Renovation: Following renovation of the Artha Mandapam and Maha Mandapam in stone-carved work, the new construction of the Arulmigu Vinayagar shrine, and separate new shrines for Arulmigu Muneeswarar, Arulmigu Karuppasamy, and the Navagrahas — along with fresh paintwork on the Moolavar’s Vimanam and the Rajagopuram, and a grand Yagasala — the temple’s Ashtabandhana Kumbabhishekam was celebrated with great splendour on 13 March 2019.

Temple Speciality: Prayer (Prarthanai). Devotees affected by pox-related ailments who visit, pray, and drink the Amman’s sacred theertham (holy water) are believed to be cured. Praying here is also believed to remove obstacles to marriage. The temple’s Arulmigu Karpaga Vinayagar shrine — sited at the special spot where a neem tree and a sacred fig (arasu) tree grow together — is where childless devotees come to pray for the blessing of children.

Golden Chariot Procession: Devotees seeking to fulfil a prayer may book the temple’s golden chariot (Thangaratham) for a fee, departing at 6:30 PM on a day of their choosing.

Chithirai Festival: At the temple’s grand annual Chithirai Perunthiruvizha, tens of thousands of devotees whose prayers have been answered arrive in procession bearing fire-pots (Agnichatti) and Sakthi Karagam as a vow offering (Nerthikadan) to Mother Dhandumariamman — one of the temple’s most distinctive traditions.

Getting There & Parking: The temple is just 700 m from Coimbatore Railway Station and 2 km from Gandhipuram Bus Stand, on Avinashi Road. V.O.C. Park, 600 m away, offers free parking on its spacious grounds. Being in a busy business area, parking immediately around the temple itself is very limited — walking in is the best option on any day.

கட்டமைப்பு விவரம்: இத்தலம் நான்கு புறங்களிலும் 15 அடி உயரமும், 120 அடி அகலமும் கொண்ட மதில் சுவரால் சூழப்பட்ட 0.39 ஏக்கர் சென்ட் அளவில் சதுர வடிவில், வடக்கு நோக்கி அமைந்துள்ளது. திருக்கோயிலின் முன் இடது புறம் தங்க திருத்தேர் நிறுத்தம் உள்ளது. இத்திருக்கோயிலில் 4 உப சன்னதிகள் உள்ளன. இடது புறத்தில் அலுவலகத்தின் அருகே அமைந்த மேடையில் திருக்கல்யாணம், நவராத்திரி போன்ற விழாக்கள் நடைபெறும்.

சமீபத்திய திருப்பணி: அர்த்தமண்டபம், மகாமண்டபம் கல்கார திருப்பணியாக செய்யப்பட்டு, அருள்மிகு விநாயகர் சன்னதி புதிதாக கட்டப்பட்டு, அருள்மிகு முனீஸ்வரர், அருள்மிகு கருப்பராயர் சன்னதி மற்றும் நவக்கிரக சன்னதிகள் தனித்தனியே புதிதாக கட்டப்பட்டு, மூலவர் விமானத்திற்கும் இராஜகோபுரத்திற்கும் வர்ணம் பூசப்பட்டு, பிரம்மாண்டமான யாகசாலை அமைக்கப்பட்டு, கடந்த 13.03.2019 அன்று அஷ்டபந்தன கும்பாபிஷேகம் மிகச்சிறப்பாக நடைபெற்றது.

திருத்தல சிறப்பு: பிரார்த்தனை. அம்மை நோயினால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் இத்திருத்தலத்திற்கு வந்து பிரார்த்தனை செய்து அம்மனின் தீர்த்தத்தை அருந்தினால் அம்மை நோய் குணமாகும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை. இத்திருத்தலத்தில் பிரார்த்தனை செய்தால் திருமணத்தடை தீரும். வேப்ப மரமும், அரசமரமும் ஒன்றாக இணைந்த சிறப்பு வாய்ந்த இடத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள அருள்மிகு கற்பக விநாயகர் சன்னதியில் வழிபட்டால் குழந்தை பேறு இல்லாதவர்களுக்கு சந்தான பாக்கியம் கிட்டும்.

தங்கரத ஊர்வலம்: பக்தர்கள் தாங்கள் விரும்பும் நாட்களில் தங்களின் வேண்டுதலை நிறைவேற்ற, கட்டணம் செலுத்தி மாலை 6.30 மணிக்கு தங்கரதம் புறப்பட, வேண்டுதலை நிறைவேற்றிக் கொள்ளலாம்.

சித்திரைப் பெருந்திருவிழா: இத்திருக்கோயிலில் நடைபெறும் சித்திரைப்பெருந்திருவிழாவில், தங்கள் வேண்டுதலை நிறைவேற்றிக்கொண்ட பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் நேர்த்திக்கடனாக அக்கினிச்சட்டி ஏந்தி சக்திகரகத்துடன் ஊர்வலம் வந்து அன்னை தண்டுமாரியம்மனை அடைவது இத்திருத்தலத்தின் மிகவும் சிறப்பு வாய்ந்த பாரம்பரியமாகும்.

The Legend of Arulmigu Dhandumariamman

The story of Mother Dhandumari — revered by the people of Coimbatore as their Kuladheivam for the removal of life’s hardships — dates to the era when the British, arriving in Coimbatore during a period of trade and resurgence, exploited disunity among the local people to further their designs of subjugating the land through cunning and deceit, prompting the region’s Palayakkarars (local chieftains) to rise in resistance. Around the same time, Tipu Sultan, the king of Mysore, dared to oppose British dominance and camped with his army within the walls of Coimbatore Fort in an effort to free the people from subjugation. It was in this very era that Mother Dhandumari revealed her presence, showering her grace upon the people. The Mother’s own age, however, remains undated. The word “thandu” refers to the camp or tent set up for soldiers to stay — Sekkizhar uses the term in the Periya Puranam when describing how Siruthondar (Paranjothi) led a northern campaign to victory, giving the word particular prominence. This word “thandu” has since been affectionately joined to the Mother’s name, becoming part of her cherished title. On the Coimbatore–Avinashi highway, Mother Dhandumari has come to reign as Mupperum Deviyai, Akilanda Nayaki, Adiparasakthi, and the serene, wish-granting Karpaga Rakshambikai — the sovereign guardian mother of Coimbatore city.

Grace in a Soldier’s Dream

While Tipu’s forces were encamped within the walls of Coimbatore Fort, among the countless soldiers stationed there, the Mother began appearing in the dreams of one particular soldier whose heart she had captured. Rare to both sight and thought, she told him she had dwelt in this land since a time beyond memory or imagination. In his dream, he saw her seated amid neem trees and shrubs, close to a natural spring in this forested tract. Waking at dawn, he searched eagerly and swiftly for the place. Parting the branches of a neem tree with his own hands, he beheld the Mother — with the pure joy of a child seeing its own mother for the first time. Overcome with happiness, he began to worship with folded hands, then danced in boundless celebration. He carried the news to his fellow soldiers, friends, and relatives, proclaiming that this Mother was to become Coimbatore’s legendary protector. Choosing an auspicious day, he built a small platform and had Mother Dhandumari installed upon it.

Word of the Mother’s presence in Coimbatore spread far and wide. Because she was discovered at the very site of the soldiers’ camp — the “thandu” — she came to be known as Dhandumari. The number of devotees who worshipped her, and were freed from hunger and disease as a result, grew with each passing day, and the Mother’s fame echoed across the land.

கோவை வாழ் மக்களால் தன் குறை நீங்க குலதெய்வமாக போற்றி வணங்கப்படும் தண்டுமாரி அன்னையின் வரலாறு, கோவையின் மறுமலர்ச்சி காலத்தில் வணிகம் செய்வதற்கு வந்த ஆங்கிலேயர் நம் மக்களிடையே காணப்பட்ட ஒற்றுமையின்மையை பயன்படுத்தி நம் நாட்டையும் நம் மக்களையும் அடிமைகளாக மாற்ற தந்திரங்களையும் வஞ்சகத் திட்டங்களையும் கையாண்ட தருணத்தில், பாளையக்காரர்கள் ஆங்கிலேயரை எதிர்க்கத் தொடங்கிய காலத்தைச் சேர்ந்தது. அது போல் மைசூர் மன்னன் திப்பு சுல்தான் ஆங்கில ஆதிக்கத்தை எதிர்க்கத் துணிந்து, நமது மக்களின் அடிமை வாழ்வை மீட்க தமது படையுடன் கோவை கோட்டை மதிலுக்குள்ளே தங்கியிருந்தான். அந்தக் காலத்தில்தான் நம் அன்னை தண்டுமாரி மக்களுக்கு அருள் மழை பொழியத் தன் இருப்பை உணர்த்தி வெளிப்பட்டு எழுந்தருளினாள். ஆனால் அன்னையின் காலம் வரையறுக்கப்படவில்லை. “தண்டு” எனும் சொல்லுக்குப் படைவீரர்கள் தங்குவதற்கு அமைக்கப்படும் கூடாரம் என்பது பொருள். சிறுத்தொண்டராகிய பரஞ்சோதி வடநாட்டுக்கு படையெடுத்துச் சென்று வென்ற செய்தியைக் கூறும் பொழுது, சேக்கிழார் பெரிய புராணத்தில் இச்சொல்லை சிறப்பித்துக் காட்டினார். இந்த “தண்டு” எனும் சொல்லே அன்னையின் பெயருக்கு அமுதூட்டும் சிங்காரச் சொல்லாய், சிறப்புப் பெயராய் அன்னையின் பெயருடன் சேர்ந்து வழங்கி வருகிறது. கோவை, அவினாசி நெடுஞ்சாலையில் அன்னை தண்டுமாரி, முப்பெருந் தேவியாய், அகிலாண்ட நாயகியாய், ஆதிபராசக்தியாய், சாந்த சொரூபிணியாய், சகல சௌபாக்கியங்களையும் வாரி வழங்கும் கற்பகரட்சாம்பிகையாய் எழுந்தருளி, கோவை நகரை அரசாட்சி செய்யும் அன்னையாய் திகழ்ந்து வருகின்றாள்.

படைவீரர்களுக்கு கனவில் அருளாட்சி

திப்புவின் படைகள் கோவை கோட்டை மதிலுக்குள் தங்கியிருந்த சமயத்தில், எண்ணற்ற வீரர்கள் படையில் இருந்தனர். ஆனால் அவள் உள்ளத்தை கொள்ளை கொண்ட ஒரு வீரனுக்கு அன்னை கனவில் அருளாட்சி செய்யத் தொடங்கினாள். கண்ணுக்கும் கருத்துக்கும் அரிய நம் தாய் தண்டுமாரியம்மன், கற்பனைக்கு எட்டாத காலம் முதல் இப்புவியில் வாழ்ந்து வருவதாக கூறினாள். வேப்ப மரங்களுக்கும் செடி கொடிகளுக்கும் இடையில், நீர்சுனைக்கு அருகில் அமைந்துள்ள இக்காட்டுப் பகுதியில் அன்னை தண்டுமாரி வீற்றிருந்த கோலத்தை கனவில் கண்ட வீரன், மறுநாள் அதிகாலையில் எழுந்து விரைவாக ஆவலுடன் தேடினான். வேப்பமரத்தின் கிளைகளைத் தன் கைகளால் விலக்கிப் பார்த்த பொழுது, பெற்ற தாயை முதலில் நோக்கும் குழந்தையாய் அவன் அன்னையை முதலில் கண்டு இன்புற்றான். பின்னர் தன் கண்கள் இன்புற்றதோடு மட்டுமல்லாமல் கையெடுத்து தொழ ஆரம்பித்தான். அவன் அடைந்த இன்பத்திற்கு எல்லையின்றி அமையவே கூத்தாடி மகிழ்ச்சியுற்றான். பின் அனைத்து படைவீரர்களுக்கும், நண்பர்கள், உறவினர்களுக்கும் நம் அன்னையே கோவையின் காவியத் தலைவியாய் பறைசாற்றத் தொடங்கினான். நல்ல நாள் பார்த்து சிறு மேடை அமைத்து, அம்மேடை மீது அன்னை தண்டுமாரியை எழுந்தருளச் செய்தான்.

இங்ஙனம் எழுந்தருளிய நம் அன்னை தண்டுமாரி கோவையில் கொலு வீற்றிருக்கும் செய்தி எல்லா இடங்களிலும் எல்லோரிடத்திலும் பேசப்பட்டது. படைவீடான தண்டு இருந்த இடத்தில் கண்டெடுக்கப்பட்ட மாரி தண்டுமாரி என அழைக்கப்பெற்றாள். பசியும் பிணியும் நீங்கி அன்னையை எண்ணி வழிபட்ட பக்தகோடி பெருமக்கள் எண்ணிக்கை நாளும் பெருகியது. அன்னையின் புகழ் அகிலமெங்கும் எதிரொலித்தது.
